The 5C community recently gathered at the Hive for the first ever Lose Your Shoes party. The Hive staff spent months preparing for the big bash, brainstorming all sorts of wild ideas to execute on the big day.
Lose Your Shoes started with just a few of the student staff members getting together for a brainstorming session. The Hive staff were thinking of ways to bring in the student body and decided it would be fun to host a “hivey” celebration where every aspect of the party serves as an expression of the Hive’s goofy, creative, and welcoming essence. By hosting Lose Your Shoes, we hoped to spread the word that the Hive is a place for you to create and be your silly self.
Lose Your Shoes was also an opportunity to bring together Hive Staff to collaborate in order to execute something much larger than an individual could achieve on their own. There was so much coordination, communication, and bonding that went into creating this event. It truly would not have been possible without each individual on Hive staff offering to share their ideas, help with planning, and setting up.
On the day of the big party, every room in the Hive was transformed into a fun and wacky space for the event. Justin, our Senior Associate Director, gave permission for his office to become the balloon room, where people enjoyed an immersive experience inside a tank of balloons similar to a larger-than-life ball pit. Meanwhile, the Commons was an area for performers to shine. Student performers, including After School Specials (A.S.S) and Leandra & the Dream (PZ ’18), took to the makeshift stage throughout the night. People listened to the beautiful tunes as they ate grilled cheese made and dropped from the sky by Hive staff Marley Cohen (PZ ‘17), who engineered the feat via a pulley system from the second floor. Hive Staffers Paloma Pineda (CM ’19) and Lily Yang (SC ‘18) captured some great pictures of performers throughout the night such as Eric Chow (PZ ‘17), who performed an LED light show.
Speaking of light shows, Olivia Cornfield (PZ ’17) turned Siberia into an underwater jellyfish wonderland featuring student artwork by Sara-ling Maltesen (PZ ‘17), with space design and decoration help from Reina Hernandez (PO ‘20), Elliot Joyce (PZ ‘18), and Pomona Alum Jeremy Wertheimer. Studio 1 turned into a sense room, where Post-Baccalaureate Associate Timothy Moore led a partner workshop of smells, touches and tastes.
With help from Natalie Slater (PO ‘18), Studio 2 transformed into the fort room! Students crawled under tables to reach the center of the room, where piles of pillows were spread out and movies were shown on the projector. Additionally, students had the opportunity to relax and play board games in the Vault or make buttons in the scrapyard. Hope those who attended enjoyed all the activities! It was a great night for the Hive community 🙂 Thank you to everyone who came and everyone who helped organize this hivey celebration.
